Churning out high-powered, well-engineered sports and supercars for two decades wasn’t enough to save McLaren Automotive from a financial crisis. The British exotic car maker’s stock has plunged and it’s in danger of losing its investment-grade credit rating—deep into junk bond territory. The company is also facing a full order book for its Ultimate Series of cars and hasn’t been able to sell many of its entry-level Sports Series models.

McLaren is taking a creative approach to deal with the looming problem, as first reported by Bloomberg. It’s selling some of its heritage cars to raise cash to fund the upcoming hybrid Artura supercar, but it won’t lose actual ownership over the vehicles. A spokesperson declined to say which heritage cars have been sold, but the brand has a collection of 54 Formula 1 race cars and F1 supercars in total that it regularly updates with newer vehicles.

The brand is selling the cars to investors, including Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding, the sovereign wealth fund that owns 60% of McLaren. It’s a way for the company to raise funds without losing custody of the cars, which will be licensed back to the brand and kept at its Woking headquarters. McLaren says it has a recapitalization plan that involves shareholders and is looking for other sources of money, too.
